The VELUX Solar Hot Water systems use what are called a closed loop, indirect solar hot water system. A closed loop system uses a solution to transfer heat from the collectors on the roof, to the tank in the garage. The solution circulates from the collectors on the roof, into stainless steel insulated hoses that travel from the roof to the system in your garage or utility room. The solution goes through a pump station into a coil inside the water tank that heats the hot water. Indirect means that the system circulates a solution through a closed loop, rather than directly circulating your hot water through the collectors on the roof. By using a solution, which is propylene glycol based, to circulate through the collector system, the system is more efficient.
Using a solar hot water system allows you to produce hot water, using the free energy in the sun, all day long, as you need hot water to shower, do laundry or wash the dishes. It will store hot water overnight that is produced during the day, so you have hot water in the morning. Once the solar hot water system is installed, you will virtually never have to pay for your hot water again.
What happens if it's cloudy? Do I still have hot water? Even on cloudy days, the system will still absorb UV rays and radiant energy filtered through the clouds. But if this is not sufficient enough to maintain the temperature in your hot water tank, the auxiliary electric back-up will heat the water. Warranty The Velux warranty on the solar hot water system is 10 years on the system and 5 years on labor as long as the system in installed by a Velux certified installer. Maintenance Your system is virtually maintenance free. You periodically should check the system that it is running correctly. Here in the southwest, the pH of the heat transfer solution should be checked by an authorized dealer every 1-2 years. If you close up your house for any extended period of time, i.e. winter visitors, you should always be sure the power to the pump is kept on at all times.
